Michelle Whyman, who completed her dissertation last year and is now on a post-doc at Duke, has received the Carl Albert Award for the best dissertation in the area of legislative studies.
Her dissertation asks "what makes law last?" The core argument is that when legislators seek out diverse sources of information, engage in deliberation, and reach a substantive compromise, they are more likely to enact durable law.
The Carl Albert Dissertation Award is given annually for the best dissertation in legislative studies. Topics may be national or subnational in focus-on Congress, parliaments, state legislatures, or other representative bodies.
